Tax Preparation Software
There are mixed opinions regarding the use and value of tax preparation
software. A number of tax software programs are available for less than $100.
As individual or joint tax payers with nothing out of the ordinary to report, such tax
preparation software can be a quick and inexpensive way for you to file your
income tax return. This is of course provided you are computer literate and can
follow instructions. In that case, software can be fun and practical to use and it will
do the math. All you need to do is provide and input the numbers.
You can also go online to the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/efile/ to electronically
file your taxes without charge. Again, the program will do the math and let you
print out your return and/or file it for you directly with the IRS.
On the other hand, if you own rental income property, buy and sell real estate or
any related business, you may find tax preparation software confusing and/or
inadequate for your needs. The average person does not know what to look for as
far as tax deductions go or how to apply them against income. When reporting the
sale of a property, you must establish a cost basis and enter into account
depreciation taken over the years. It can get a little complicated. Most tax software
is vague in this area and some are lacking the proper forms you need. You may over look an important item that will end up
costing you tax dollars.
The same goes for other businesses, being sales or service. You may need to file a State income tax in addition to the IRS return.
Some software does not have this option. If you have employees, that is another area where you need an expert to help you with
your tax return.
A professional tax accountant or CPA is in business to help you with your business and have the experience necessary to file an
accurate and complete tax return that takes advantage of the latest tax laws.
